Unfortunately, these are only photographs, and they cannot speak. So we will try more directly. Casale dei Frontini is cradled in the graceful slopes of the Martani Mountain foothills, which fall with their creeks and streams to the Tiber River Valley, at approximately 1000 feet above sea level. The farm’s wide covered porch, the pool, and the grounds, all have postcard views of ancient Todi and the Umbrian countryside beloved by St. Francis with its far off mountain ranges, medieval castles, tile-roofed villages, and farms. In midsummer the hills are intensely green.During the rest of the year, when the crops are just rising from the earth, or after the land is harvested and bare, we have a new beauty and a new serenity. Our guests tell us that they feel as if they have walked into a fairy tale, a magical place where time stops and the medieval world and the twenty-first century unite in quiet and harmony.
This is true. It is peaceful here except for the sounds of ducks and cows and hens.
The rabbits, the horse, and barn cats disturb no one, and our big-hearted little dogs ‘Tequila’ and ‘Small’ seldom bark, although they will welcome you with gratitude. The Casale dei Frontini has fifty acres of land on which we graze our twenty head of Chianini cattle, one of the oldest breeds in history, and still the largest. You can see them depicted in ancient Roman art.
We also cultivate grapes, sunflowers, olives, and grain. The country house was originally built around 1700 as a monastery, and its architecture is beautiful. Our family, my wife and three sons, renovated these lovely buildings with the same taste and devotion with which they were originally built three hundred years ago. Umbria is known for its good food, and the Casale dei Frontini shares this tradition. Our bed and breakfast guests can expect a hearty continental breakfast with homemade jams and superb cappuccinos with yogurts and breads. My wife, Silvana, is a wonderful cook, and if you choose to have dinner with us on any night, you will enjoy succulent appetizer platters; regional pastas; roast meat dishes, often from our own Chianini cattle; and dessert recipes that have been passed down through many generations of our family.
If this tranquil life is not enough to quiet your spirit and refresh your mind, we have hundreds of activities for you to choose from. Take a horseback ride along the shady paths; enjoy the nearby villages and farm paths on our mountain bikes. Challenge yourself with bocce ball and ping-pong, or refresh yourself in the swimming pool surrounded by roses while your children enjoy our award-winning playground.
